  3.                     THE LIFE OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

  9.        William Shakespeare  was born in 1564 in the town of Stratford,
  10.   about 150 kilometres from London.  His family was quite well off and
  11.   William was well educated at the local Grammar School.
  12.  
  13.        At the age of 18  he married Anne Hathaway,  and by the time he
  14.   was 20, he was the father of 3 children.
  15.  
  16.        We know little of the next few years they are often called, the
  17.   lost years, but certainly by the time he reached 26, Shakespeare had
  18.   joined a company of actors in London and was writing his first plays.
  19.  
  20.         He became a shareholder in a group of actors called " The Lord
  21.   Chamberlain's men",  and this company later  gained the patronage of
  22.   King James I and became The King's Men."

  24.         He enjoyed the life of an actor and playwright in London but he
  25.   never lost his ties with Stratford, his home town. Shakespeare became
  26.   a wealthy man from his plays, and in his later years he bought a very
  27.   large house in Stratford, where he eventually retired."

  29.         In his 52 years, this remarkable man crammed many achievements.
  30.   He wrote 37 of the most famous and popular plays  ever written in the
  31.   English language, as well as a wealth of poetry. All this in addition
  32.   to his profession as an actor."

  34.         Shakespeare died in Stratford in 1616.
